Volare to Build the World’s Most Efficient Protein Factory in Pori – €26M Investment Secured
Finnish biotech company Volare is investing in a state-of-the-art protein factory in Pori. The €26 million project will strengthen Europe’s protein self-sufficiency and showcase circular economy innovation at its best.

Finnish biotech company Volare has secured €26 million in funding to build a new production facility in Pori, Finland. The upcoming Volare 01 plant will be the world’s most energy-efficient protein factory and a major step in scaling Volare’s innovative insect protein technology. The round includes a mix of equity, mezzanine and senior loans, and public funding, with support from Maki.vc, Firstminute Capital, Springvest, The Finnish Climate Fund (to be merged with Finnish Industry Investment), Finnvera, Norion Bank, South Ostrobothnia ELY Centre and Business Finland.
Using black soldier flies and a proprietary, zero-waste, fossil-free process, Volare transforms food industry byproducts into high-quality protein, oil, and fertilizer. The new facility will help improve Europe’s protein self-sufficiency while reducing environmental impact and supporting the circular economy.
Volare’s ingredients are already used in aquafeed, pet food, and poultry feed, and the company has secured offtake agreements to ensure long-term demand. The Pori facility will produce the equivalent protein of 200 million Baltic herrings annually and serve as a model for future expansion across Finland and Northern Europe.
The company is also entering a new phase of growth. Co-founder Jarna Hyvönen will take over as CEO in June 2025, while Tuure Parviainen, previously CEO, will become Chief Science Officer to focus on advancing Volare’s core technologies.
This investment reinforces Pori’s position as a hub for sustainable industry and green innovation in Finland.
